Sera Ella Waterfall



Sera Ella falls is a beautiful waterfall located in the Matale District of the central province. this beautiful  waterfall can be seen in the vicinity of the Knuckles range. if you are traveling to Riverstone you can also choose Sera Ella falls as part of your trip to make your experience unforgettable.

From Matale town via pass Rattota you can reach the scenic Riverstone mountain. continuing along the same route, you will come across most popular tourist destination " Pitawala Patana". after a short distance you will come across the junction leading to Sera falls. the road to the left at the junction goes straight to "Pothatawela" village and in this village is the Sera Falls, we are talking about.



 
The Sera Ella waterfall height is 10m and width is 30 m. Tourists can see two water drops in this attractive waterfall. it is said that Sera falls was a rich source for poets in the past. to form Sera falls, water from Kitul canal, water from Kadugammana Mountain and Hunumadala River join Puwakpitiya River and which later joins Thelgamu Oya. so finally, Thelgamu Oya forms the attractive Sera Fall.

There is a famous folklore which says that, how the falls got it name as " Sera Ella". according to that folklore is said by villagers, the waterfall gets its name because of a species of fish that inherent to that area, named as "Sera".

The visitors can see great shots in rainy season, at the "Sera" waterfall. the view from the bottom of the waterfall is very amazing. the uniqueness of this waterfall is that any visitor can walk to the cave behind the waterfall. this experience can't bee obtained from any other waterfall in Sri Lanka. "Sera Ella" is the only place gives us to that kind of experience  in Sri Lanka. when you walk to the cave behind the waterfall, you can see the water is falling in front of you. anyone can reach it even when waterfall is full with the water, it's a great experience for you. when you visit the waterfall you can see that some rocks have been cut with steps to reach to the waterfall. but due to the water most of rocks tend to slippery, so you should careful when you are climbing them. also there is a famous secret about the Sera waterfall among the villagers, that is a hidden treasure behind the curtain of the waterfall.






Wherever you visit in Sri Lanka, do not use polythene, plastic to destroy those places. it also applies to this waterfall and this people of this village expect your decent behavior. if you are looking for a tourist destination in Matale, add this "Sera Ella" waterfall to that list.
