Kalabokka is a 360 ° viewpoint that belongs to the largest tea estate in Sri Lanka. It is a beautiful place located in the Panvila, Kabaragala area in the Matale District. Kalabokka upper-division viewpoint is located on the road from Panvila to Matale, about 6km from the main road. Although it is about 6km, it is a beautiful road with side paths to go up. From the top of the hill, you can see a 360 ° wide view. The viewpoint is located at an altitude of 1175m above sea level.

If you are planning to visit from Kandy, you can come via Katugastota, Madawala, Wattegama, Panvila, and Madolkale to Kalabokka. That is about a 38km journey. If you are coming from Matale, you will have to come 6km along Matale – Jaffna Road till you meet Kandenuwara road. From there, there is a 27km journey to reach Kalabokka. You can also visit Kalabokka on your way to Sembuwatta or Riverston. If you are a resident around Kandy or Matale, you can visit this place within one day. Kalabokka upper-division viewpoint is a suitable place to do camping too.

Kalabokka is a government forest reserve maintained by Sri Lanka State Plantation Corporation. So, if you are willing to do camping there, you will have to get permission first. You can also book some state bungalows to stay in for very low prices.

Kalabokka is a very rural area. The roads are narrow and there are so many bends along the road. Therefore, be careful while driving on these roads. You will meet some very beautiful views on your way. There are many tea estates, waterfalls, streams, temples, kovils, and beautiful, friendly villages on the way. You will also find fresh fruits, vegetables, and treacle in those villages. It is good if you can support them by buying their quality and fresh products.

When you come along the main road, you will see a sign saying “View Point 360 °”. You will have to buy a ticket for LKR 100 from the ticket counter there. The viewpoint is about 6km from the ticket counter. The road to the 360 ° viewpoint is a bit rough, so unless you have a motorbike or a scooter, or a 4X4 vehicle, it is best to leave your vehicle at the ticket counter. There are parking facilities available there and you won’t have to worry about the safety of your vehicles. The road is very beautiful with so many beautiful wildflowers and small streams with clean and cool water. So, it is not very difficult to go on foot.

On the way to the hilltop, you will meet beautiful tea estates and very friendly tea pickers. Climbing through tea estates is way easier and it makes the journey shorter. But you will have to be ready to meet leeches there. So, don’t forget to pack some salt, soap, and some first aid.

When you climb up, you will see a beautiful 3600 view of the area. You can see Matale Town, Sembuwatta Lake, Knuckles Mountain Range, Batalegala, Pidurutalagala, Riverston Mountain Range, Kandy City, and even Adam’s Peak from the viewpoint. Sembuwatta is located below Kalabokka and is about 3km away. On your trip to Kalabokka, you will also be able to see Huluganga Falls, Lebanon Falls, Thaliya Watunu Ella, Jodu Ella, Sari Ella and Rassa Ella within one day.

There are several wooden huts to help you rest after the long climb. A toilet and a water tank with clean and cool water are also there. So, Kalabokka is a very traveler-friendly place.

If you love to do camping, Kalabokka upper-division viewpoint is the best place. You will have to pay LKR 3,500 to book a camping site, at the ticket counter. Camping there is easy because there are all the required facilities including water and sanitation. You can easily find wood for the campfire and there is plenty of room to put up tents. The weather up there is a bit cold. So, it is better if you pack your scarves and jackets. Despite the cold weather, it will be very nice to have a hot mug of coffee while looking at the beautiful night view of Kandy City, Matale City, and Adam’s Peak. You can also witness the beauty of sunrise and sunset from the Kalabokka viewpoint if you do camping there.

Visiting the Kalabokka viewpoint will be a great experience for any traveler. Also, if you are a photographer, you will be able to capture some iconic landscape photographs throughout the journey. The climate is very soothing, the people are friendly, the climb is not much hard and the views are beautiful in Kalabokka.
